Trace elements and conception rates

A Cobalt/B12 deficiency is extremely unlikely in mixed age ewes but could be a factor with hogget mating. Check with your local vet whether or not Selenium and Iodine deficiencies have been a problem in your area. Selenium can be monitored by blood sampling but there is no suitable test for Iodine. However, there may be information available in your local vet clinic about responses to supplementation as well as trial results to recommend its widespread use. If administering orally, Iodine and Selenium should be given 2-3 weeks pre-tup. You may like to use Flexidine (the long acting Iodine injection), which needs to be given at least 4-6 weeks ahead of mating
